‘I was given the opportunity to progress internally’

Lively and active: that’s how dog people describe themselves. But Mathieu is also every bit as loyal as his hairy four-legged friend. After his initial experience as an auditor at Grant Thornton, he decided to explore new opportunities within the firm and prove his ability as a Transaction Advisory Supervisor. ‘I like working with numbers and people.’

Who is Mathieu De Waele?

Position: Transaction Advisory Supervisor Dog walker

Age: 29

Office: Brussels

Energy source: giving clients peace of mind

Hobbies: sport and walking the dog

How did you end up at Grant Thornton?

Mathieu: ‘Right in the middle of the coronavirus period, I suddenly had to look for a new job due to restructuring at my previous employer. I had about two years of experience in audit at the time and only knew of Grant Thornton through word of mouth. I decided to take a chance and was pleasantly surprised during my application process. Although the atmosphere is friendly, the firm also feels very international: the best of both worlds.’

What opportunities does Grant Thornton offer?

Mathieu: ‘After three years in audit, and a six-month stay at their member firm in Australia, I needed a new challenge. But I preferably wanted to stay at Grant Thornton. My colleagues didn’t want me to leave either, so we looked together at the possibility of progressing internally. That’s how I eventually ended up at transaction advice, and I haven’t regretted the move for one moment.’

What makes working at Grant Thornton so enjoyable?

Mathieu: ‘The informal atmosphere appealed to me: colleagues still know each other by name. There’s also a lot of respect for who you are. Diversity and inclusion aren’t buzzwords here, but a daily reality. You don’t have to put on a mask.’

How do you see your future development?

Mathieu: ‘A management position is high on my bucket list, but I first want to gain some more experience and hone my leadership skills further. Maybe in a few years’ time. But I also wouldn’t rule out a temporary return to Australia. I’m not keen on being tied down and I like flexibility, meeting new people and gaining new experiences. I’ll see what comes my way.’
